===== Function Help - [E]nter Message ===============================
This function is used to enter a message into the system for others to
read.
After making this selection, the program will indicate that you should
enter your message, using a [C/R] alone to end - with 17 lines maximum.
What this means is that you should enter your message and when you
want to quit, just press [RETURN] on a blank line. When you do, the
program will recognize that you wish to perform another function and
will display the line shown below...
[A]bort, [C]ontinue, [D]elete, [E]dit, [H]elp, [I]nsert, [L]ist, [S]ave?
This prompt is asking you what you now wish to do with the text you
have entered. Each function is detailed following:
1. [A]bort - This will cancel the message and not enter it in the
system. If you have made a lot of errors in entering your
message, you will probably want to [A]bort it and start all over
rather than trying to [E]dit your mistakes. The program will ask
you to verify the abort just in case you pressed [A] in error.
2. [C]ontinue - This will allow you to continue entering more lines
in your text. It will NOT continue at the end of the last
characters of the last line you entered - it will start a new
line after the last one you typed characters in. Make sense?
Anyway, you are only allowed 19 lines total - so watch your limit.
3. [D]elete - This allows you to delete a specific line number in
the message. Before entering the line number to delete, you will
probably want to use the [L]ist function to first display your
entire message on the screen - with the line numbers which have
been assigned to each line of text by the program. If there is
actually a line you wish to delete, enter the line number when
requested to do so by the program. Then re-list your message
to verify it is as you wish it to appear. If you try and enter
an invalid line number, the program will inform you of your
error.
4. [E]dit - This choice allows you to change some text you have
already entered in a previous line. First, [L]ist the message
using [L] to see your entire text. If you notice an error in
your typing, note the line number it is in. Also, note EXACTLY
the way you have typed the text which is in error. Next, select
[E] for edit. The program will then ask you the line number you
wish to edit. Enter the appropriate one. Then the program will
prompt you with the following...
Enter [Oldstring;Newstring] or [C/R] for no change.
This is asking you to type in the text as it presently appears,
separated by a ";", followed by the text as it should appear. For
example, if you entered the following line of text...
This is a mesage for you Sam.
and wanted to correct the spelling of "mesage", you would select
[E], followed by the line number of the text that the error
occurs in, followed by...
mesage;message
This will replace the old word with the new one and re-display the
line for you. If you are happy with the change, just press your
[RETURN] key to finish editing. At that point the function
selection prompts will again appear and you can re-list your
message, save it, etc.
NOTE: Do not try and make a whole lot of changes to a line using
the edit function. If you have a line of text that needs a lot
of work, [D]elete it and then [I]nsert a new line in it's place.
Also, if you add a whole lot of characters to a line which is close
to the maximum line length, the line will overflow when you try
and save or list it and may cause an error in our files on the
board. Please use some common sense when using the [E]dit function -
this software is NOT a word processor! Also, if you are changing
text which includes several words, you must include all spaces, etc.
that apply. The same goes for junk characters which may be on
your screen due to line hits. The best advice I can give you is
that if it appears your message is not in good format, [A]bort
it rather than ruining this board's filing system. I tend to
get a little upset with users who ruin board files!!!!
5. [H]elp brings up this screen display for review.
6. [I]nsert - This is used to insert a line of text into your message.
The program will ask you the line number you wish to insert BEFORE.
In other words, your text will be shifted down one line. After
entering the line number to insert, you will be allowed to enter
your continuing text. After you have inserted your new line,
re-list the message for review.
7. [S]ave - The selection that actually saves your message or comment
into the board's files. If you don't use this option, your
message will not be saved. (By the way, the only means of exiting
the message screen is to either [A]bort or [S]ave your text!)
